  • Semi Pro has become a 45 yard class

This is meant strictly as constructive criticism. The ASA game is by far my favorite, and I have shot plenty of the "other". It runs smooth for the most part, and attending ASA events is great fun. One of the best things about ASA is how those in charge listen to the shooters (customers) when they see something that could be done better. This is my intention. The observations I'm sharing have been voiced by others as well as myself.

In the first 3 tournaments of the season, I am noticing a trend. The ranges are getting much shorter in Semi Pro. In fact, it has essentially become a 45 yard class and in my opinion does little to prepare for Open Pro. The average shot seems to be about 34-37 yards. Only a handful are over 40 yards, and none approach 50 yards. Part of this is no doubt due to the fact that the range is shared with the Unlimited Class (a 45 yard class). Most in that class have been warned that they are on the Semi Pro range and 50 yard shots are possible, but they are pretty much nonexistent the last couple years.

Also, it seems that peer grouping for Semi Pro is a thing of the past. It was something most archers I knew enjoyed. I realize it adds work to the office, but I wanted to mention it since many love it.

Hopefully, this issue (the targets being set at shorter distances) will be addressed. When I finished shooting last month (in under 3.5 hours, great job range officials!), I went to watch my wife in Women's Open A finish her round. I heard many comments that their range looked longer than the one we shot. As somebody who may very likely never compete in the Open Pro class, I would still love to see a range that is more of a stepping stone to that class.

Since you have opened the door for a little constructive critism I would like to add mine. Here goes, the F range in Louisiana limbs and things blocking the kill zones for us short people, I really think this shopuld be addressed. The ASA is set up for everything to be the same for all competitors so that it is fair. Also one man shot both rounds Saturday and this is not fair. People drive a long ways to shoot these tournaments and we all have things to do. If you cannot shoot both days stay home. I also hate that we shot the same range in the team shoot that we shot on Sunday, not fair for those that did not get to shoot the team shoot. Well that is my complaints, thanks Don James

      No critism here, just pointing out up here in Central Illinois, Peoria and surrounding areas out say 60 miles radius. Compound bows with sights;

45 yards is the norm for saying a max of 45 and "might be farther" is added and 50 yards is a reality. There are two most used organizations for classes, NFAA and the IBO.

One club uses ASA classes. Regardless, 45 yards is still the norm for all Adult Bow Hunters whether using a release or fingers.

All clubs using other than ASA classes; Same 45 yards. There is no Bow Novice class. There is no Open C, B or A. They are all deemed Free Style and 45 yards used. NFAA has 45 yards for Women.

One club doesn't blink a eye for setting targets 50 yards and more.

No club that I know of has Known Yardage for any shooter. I'd have to check the one ASA club to be certain, but I didn't see known listed.

At clubs not using ASA classes should you use a range finder you can't turn your card in for score. One club had a range finder class and it was done away with, not enough shooters to support it.

At clubs not using ASA classes should you elect to shooter a stake short than for your class you can't turn your card in for score.

Traditional bows and compounds with no sight, using fingers; Max 35 yards on large targets. Again, clubs not using ASA classes.

And perhaps of several clubs there is only one that is not a ASA club. Privately owned club.

So basically, I guess, ASA has max yardages to sort of level the field, keep the good shooters from running away from the average shooter?

To get back to Darin's original post, I think the best way to fix the scenario would be to make the unlimited class be a 50 yd class again. If they are on a range that could potentially be out to 50 yards then they are essentially in a 50 yard class anyway. I would like to hear some of the umlimited guys chime in to see waht they think. I know we have discussed this before at great length but it has been a while and it would be good to hear from some of the current unlimited shooters.

I remember when we shot alternating stakes with the Pros. Now that was fun!

Darin, great post! Like you said, the ASA and their staff do an awesome job at setting these courses and making the whole weekend and an awesome experience!

I definitely agree though, I would love for the courses to be longer!!

Not to sound like one of those guys "Well eventually I'll get them to create a class/course so I can win too!" Unless they make one for tall, left handed, goofy people with glasses! (Notice I said tall Tim, you'll have to find your own class!)

That being said, the courses won't affect me having a chance! I just enjoy shooting the more difficult ranges!

Ben, I agree. I cannot imagine what kind of range they could set for me to win. I've shot plenty of hard ranges and plenty of easy ranges and my number of wins in semi pro remains zero. And, since everybody shoots them, the ranges are completely fair.

My point in posting this was just to bring up that I don't think these ranges are good preparation for the pro classes. I hoped that the ASA might keep this in mind when setting them in the future. Also, like mentioned above, something needs to be done to clear up the discrepancy of the Unlimited/Semi having a different max yardage but shooting the same range and stake.

Mike is sitting back right now laughing his rear off! "They want it, they'll get it!" Texas is gonna have a 71 yard average shot! LOL

if you want 'em set further you're gonna have to pay Finger, Buzzard and the crew to walk the extra walk to set out there.

I agree, that the semi-pro class should have an aggressive course, otherwise they will be unprepared to cope with the longer distances of the pro class --- would be similar to being thrown into a lions den.
